Equal director wins St David Award!

On 21st March, Equal co-director Liam Rahman was announced the winner of the 2019 St David Award in the International category. The award was granted to him in recognition of his work in expanding educational opportunities to pupils across Wales. Last year, Liam established a unique and impactful partnership between the Welsh Government’s Seren Network and the Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) programme at Yale University.

Through this partnership, 16 Welsh sixth formers attended YYGS last summer, with full scholarships co-funded by the Welsh Government and YYGS. In addition to this, Equal raised over £12,000 to fund all 16 students’ flights in full, ensuring that the opportunity was possible for all students admitted on the basis of academic merit, irrespective of their financial backgrounds.

In 2019, we’ve expanded Seren’s international initiatives. This summer 53 Seren students will be attending the Yale Young Global Scholars and Harvard Summer School programmes. Two of those students will be travelling to the Yale Center in Beijing! The 53 pupils represent 38 different Welsh-medium and English-medium secondary schools and sixth form colleges from across 20 of Wales’ 22 Local Authorities.
